In Jamaica, the chilli pepper (Pimenta Dioica) industry is at the heart of a sustainable development programme.
Known for its Essential Oil, the chilli pepper is a fragile resource harvested from the wild by local communities. The collection is located in the areas of St Ann Bay, St Elizabeth and St Thomas to the North West of Kingston.
Jean GAZIGNAIRE – Groupe MUL has been working for several years on the different issues of this sector in order to ensure its security. Actions implemented on economic, social, societal and environmental pillars such as
the organisation of sustainable harvesting to ensure additional income for the pickers, and the reduction of resource depletion due to overexploitation of the leaves for distillation and the cutting of wood for fuel.
